COMMERCIAL HEAT TREATING
Duraloy also makes products for the
commercial heat treating industry. Parts such as furnace
piers, baskets, trays, rollers and roller rails, muffles
and radiant tubes are sold world wide for use in commercial
heat treating furnaces and processing.

 |
Large Diameter Spiral Retort
Spiral retorts are used to heat treat a variety of parts that are typically very small in size. Parts like ball bearings, coins, nuts and bolts, and aircraft fasteners are typically heat treated in this type of a retort.
Duraloy produces these retorts in a variety of heat resistant alloys, depending on the the application, heat treating environment and temperatures. The internal flights are cast integrally with the outer shell of the retort to eliminate hours of welding.

Large Diameter Spiral Retorts
The design of a retort is based upon the heat treat cycle that is desired for
the particular part. The spacing, height of the internal flights and the retort
diameter, when coupled with the rotational speed in the furnace, define the "dwell" time
and throughput of the parts in the furnace.
Duraloy produces retorts from 16" (406mm) to 40" (1016mm) with integrally cast
internal flights.

Integrally Cast Spiral Flights
The flights in spiral retorts are integrally cast to the outside barrel of the retort using proprietary casting techniques developed by Duraloy. This eliminates the need to weld the flights to the inside.
The size, thickness, spacing, and pitch of the inside flights can all be adjusted based on the designer's engineering criteria.

Bottle Retort
This is a different type of retort, a "bottle" or batch retort. These retorts are used by commercial heat treaters to contain a "lot" or batch of components to be thermally treated, instead of continuous heat treatment, like a spiral retort.
As with the spiral retorts, these statically cast bottles can be made in a variety of heat resistant alloys depending on the intended end use and furnace temperatures.

Small Diameter Spiral Retort
This is an example of one of the smaller spiral retorts produced by Duraloy. The operation is very similar to large retorts.
This retort has been machined and has a collar installed and is ready for shipment and installation by the customer.

Spiral Retort Discharge End
This is an integrally cast discharge "mouth" on a spiral retort. As the parts complete their journey through the retort, they are discharged through this opening onto a cooling bed or chute.

Spiral Retorts
Spiral retorts can be used for a variety of applications, including heat treating small parts like nails, nuts and bolts, and chain pins; surface treatments, like nitriding and carburizing; or maintaining an inert atmosphere (like argon) to protect the parts being treated.
Retorts are externally heated using LP gas, natural gas or electric coils. They are usually cast in HT, HW, or HX alloy.

Spiral Retort
This is a medium sized retort ready to be shot blasted. While the majority of the outside surface is as cast, raceways are machined into the outside to allow the retort to rotate smoothly in the furnace.

Retort Hood and Chute Assembly
This casting is attached to the discharge end of a spiral retort and is used to direct the parts or product being heat treated. After each 360 degree revolution of the retort, parts a spilled out of the discharge mouth and into this hood and chute.
As with the retort, the hood and chute can be made of a variety of alloys, depending on the temperatures and the parts being heat treated.
